"Speak"
The moon sat high in the sky, perched above the tops of the pines like an all-seeing eye. In the distance, Yarrowclaw could hear a lonely whoosh, passing by before running away to the other side. He knew what the sound belonged to one of the monsters that so often raced along the thunderpath. Briefly, he imagined a shiny, oddly shaped body racing along on thick black paws, panting out its sickly smelling breath in a trail pulled along by the wind of its speed. The tom shook his head, paws still carrying him along at a steady pace.
He often took walks like this, enjoying the opportunity to think when he was having a particularly sleepless night – much like the current point in time. Through the trees, he could see the black river-like expanse stretching off to either side, dividing Shadowclan’s and Thunderclan’s territory with a border that could easily spell death for a cat. Yarrowclaw padded towards it, his nose burning ever so slightly from the fumes that forever hung in the air. While he wasn’t completely comfortable with being extremely close to the side of the path, he found it nice to have a clear opening to peer up at the sky.
His favorite thing to see was the colorful cloud in the night sky, that surrounded the stars like a blanket. He often wondered what it was, wondered if it was possible to walk on it once one joined Starclan. He hoped he wouldn’t know for a while. He found a favorite spot of his to sit; a log propped against the trunk of another tree, that created a slope upward. He padded up, claws out to give him some stability, and settled beside the knot of a long-gone branch stump. His tail flicked slowly, in a thoughtful manner as he turned his gaze upward, picking out little details while thinking over the process of the day, thinking over schedules, and needs. [nospaces] [attr="class","pwfcontain"] [attr="class","pwfheader"] [attr="class","pwfhdtag"] gemini [attr="class","pwfhdnotes"] notes...hope you don't mind her stepping in [attr="class","pwficon"] [attr="class","pwficonbg"] [attr="class","pwfbody"] The night had just recently set, and with the night brought the moon and stars. It was exhilarating for her being out in the night. Her sleek black fur seemed to effortlessly blend into the surrounding territory of ShadowClan, even as the trees began to thin as she made her way to the thunder path. She was always curious about the black river. Although she never got closer than a fox-length from it. Everyone new about the dangers of the path, how these metal beast ran against it, how if a cat was struck on the path they would likely die. It was dangerous, but something about the fact of having nine lives made her feel invincible. [break][break]
Soon the road came into her eyesight, barely noticeable unless you were looking for it. However, the smell was very well-known. Ivystar couldn't explain the smell, it wasn't something natural. She shook the thoughts from her head and continued on towards her destination. She didn't exactly know what her destination was, but she was going somewhere. Soon there were no trees around her, she had arrived at the thunder path. There was a stillness in the air as she stopped. Her yellow eyes danced about, looking at the ever expanding thunder path, and then looking to the other side of the thunder path. The idea always intrigued her, what would happen if she crossed? Just to explore if nothing else... Although she was tempted to cross, she knew better than to put her life and the livelihood of her clan at risk. Ivystar let out a light sigh, watching as her breath formed in the air and slowly dissipated into the atmosphere. It was calming to her, the stillness. Nothing seemed to move in this part of the territory, nothing but the stars and occasional beast that ran on the thunder path.[break][break]
Even though there was a stillness in the air and territory, Ivystar had a sudden rush of energy, as if being outside and away from the stress of clan life had suddenly given her boundless amount of energy. Ivystar lifted her nose to the air, searching for any scents. There was nothing much; however, it seemed as though a clan member had recently passed by the thunder path. Who would be out this late besides her? She became intrigued by the scent, going through a list of cats who it could possibly be. She followed the scent for a short time, the cat wasn't far away from her current location and was likely able to see her already. As she walked, she allowed her body to melt back into the shadows and only her eyes became visible to others. She felt her heart begin to race as she got closed to the cat as if it was some sort of hunt to her.[break][break] The black she-cat halted in the shadows as she caught sight of the cat. It was none other than Yarrowclaw, her deputy and old friend. She slowly began to form from the shadows, coming into Yarrowclaw's line of sight, "Evening, Yarrowclaw, what brings you out this far?"

The faintest rustling in the forest behind him drew the attention of an ear. Yarrowclaw kept his eyes trained upward until the sounds of movement came close enough to prompt the thought that perhaps whoever was making the noises intended to be coming in his direction. His tail flicked slowly, amber eyes scanning the forest.
He focused on the glint of moonlight on eyes until the figure of a cat came into focus from the shadows. The figure seemed to peel from them, materializing into the features of someone that he recognized. His tail lifted slightly in greeting, his head dipping a heartbeat later as a sign of respect towards his young leader.
Ginger ears twitched at her words, before he shook his head. “Nothing more than my own thoughts really,” he admitted. “Why not think while looking at the sky?” He motioned for her to come up, as he slid over, making room for her beside him. He was quiet for a moment, before he returned the question. “What brings you out?” His head turned a brief second later, focusing on two glowing eyes off in the distance, steadily approaching.
The distinctive snarl of a monster touched his ears, getting louder the closer it got. Yarrowclaw only stared, watching as it eventually charged past them, leaving them to look at the strange second pair of eyes on its behind that glowed red, rather than yellow. He had long since noted that these only seemed visible at night, or during the day if the monster happened to slow down. He couldn’t figure out why though. Did they not trust whatever may lay behind them so much that they needed another set of eyes? Were they scared of their own kind? “Those things are so strange,” the ginger deputy commented thoughtfully. YARROWCLAW table (c) gemini || cat (c) deviantart Ciri

[attr="class","pwficon"] [attr="class","pwficonbg"] [attr="class","pwfbody"] It was only a few moments before the tom recognized who she was and gave a formal greeting, though Ivystar preferred cats she knew wouldn't greet her so properly since it made her feel awkward as she still adjusted to her new leadership position. The black she-cat joined Yarrowclaw on his sitting place where there would be enough room for a cat her size as he continued to speak to her. She gave a nod as he mentioned thinking about his feelings while looking at the clear night sky. She did this too, more often than recently since coming under much more stress than she was comfortable with. She often gave silent wishes for someone to help show her the way she should go in order to help her clan the best. She figured that Yarrowclaw would be her saving grace. He was older and had had more experience with the ways of ShadowClan than Ivystar had; she was sure that he would be a great help to her during her time as a leader and would make a great leader if something were to happen to her. "I do think about things while looking at the night sky sometimes. Though I usually don't go this close to the thunder path to think about things..."[break][break]
Before she could speak again, a low growl began in the distance. It got louder and louder as glowing eyes appeared in the darkness. The monster swooshed by the two cats, leaving a gust of wind and it's glowing red eyes staring at the two cats. They only glowed at night. Why was that? Perhaps a tactic to scare off its enemies. Either way, those monsters were strange. Just as she thought about them, Yarrowclaw made a comment on the monsters and she nodded in agreement. "I only see them on these black rivers. And sometimes they spit two-legs out of them," the she-cat commented before looking back at the ginger deputy.[break][break]
There was a small moment of silence between the two cats before Ivystar once again began to speak about the roaring monsters. "Where do you think that black river leads? I've followed it for some time, but I never managed to find the end like a natural river. Everything about those monsters are strange." As the monster's eyes faded from her view completely, Ivystar began to relax as she felt more comfortable hidden in the night and away from the monster's eyes now. "Do you think the monsters would ever chase after us?"

The ginger tom glanced back to the sky, pondering the home of the graceful dead. He wondered if they heard their prayers if there was proof of their answering them. Yarrowclaw never really thought of his own spirituality. Did he buy fully into the religion of the clans? He must if he assumed that the sky was the Silverpelt. Right? Perhaps he’d never really had an experience that pushed him one way or another – life simply had been as it had been so far. Even after the death of his mother, he hadn’t sent words skyward. Of course, he couldn’t deny their existence after death, and he couldn’t deny some power that allowed clan leaders to have their nine lives, he’d seen a leader die and come back. Beyond the ability to do as such, were they smarter than any of their earth-bound predecessors? He wasn’t sure. Perhaps one day, he would know.
He looked over at Ivystar as she spoke, “I do think about things while looking at the night sky sometimes. Though I usually don’t go this close to the thunderpath to think about things…” He nodded slightly. “It’s peaceful. And the path creates an opening in the trees that gives the sky clarity. I’ve noticed that there’s a cloud in the stars. Sometimes it has a yellow color, sometimes it’s purple. I’ve even seen blue and green in it. What do you think that is?” He turned his gaze upward again, pointing with his nose towards the streak across the sky, a smear like berries had been crushed beneath a paw, or a storm raging just beyond them. It was interesting to look at without trees breaking it. It must be interesting to look up from Windclan’s territory and see the sky so clearly. Even with monsters roaring past every little bit, it was rather peaceful. They never seemed to notice him, and so Yarrowclaw found himself really unphased by them. Either way, he didn’t think they could reach up to his perch.
“I think maybe they use these paths like we use paths in the trees. It’s the easiest way to move if you’re not hunting. Maybe they’re patrolling? Maybe it’s a border, like it is for us and Thunderclan,” he said, looking down at the strange black stone like path. The colorful lines on the edges, and in the middle shone even brighter than the stone, catching the light in a way that made them impossible not to see. They seemed to have a pattern with their directions, keeping to one side depending. He’d spent enough time in the tree over the seasons to piece this fact together. They only deviated when something was wrong.
“Do you think the monsters would ever chase after us?” Yarrowclaw thought for a few moments, before he shrugged. “I’m not entirely sure. At least right here, I don’t think that they can see us. They’ve never reacted, and I’ve come to this spot since this tree fell over before you were even born,” he stated. “Even during the day, if you stay away from the open stretch, they don’t seem to notice us. I don’t know if they can even leave. I’ve heard tale though, that they can if their paws are different. I’ve never seen any with different paws though.” It was true, he’d only ever seen the round black ones, with their shinny middles. Maybe there were different types of monsters, like there were different types of birds? Yarrowclaw wasn’t certain, and he wasn’t sure he believed the stories; he never seen anything that confirmed that.

[attr="class","pwficon"] [attr="class","pwficonbg"] [attr="class","pwfbody"] The area around the two cats was still. It was as if they were the only two living things around, besides from the monsters that ran past every now and then on their strange path. The two cats would look back at the thunder path and every few moments Ivystar would look across the path into ThunderClan's territory as if she was just waiting for something to happen. Thankfully, nothing happen every time she looked back at the other territory. [break][break]
Ivystar's head began to tilt as Yarrowclaw spoke about the odd colored cloud in the sky that blocked some of the stars. The cloud was yellow, purple, green, and blue? Clouds weren't those colors... She turned her head and began to look up at the sky. There was the faintest look of the cloud Yarrowclaw was talking about. It was rather beautiful, and it was moving through the sky. It couldn't be a cloud, clouds don't seem to move like that. It was a flowing movement and the colors began to change as they moved. It was rather beautiful, and Ivystar had never taken the time to look up at the sky and just appreciate the night sky and everything that makes it. "I don't know what it is exactly... but I don't think it would be a cloud" she spoke before turning her head back to the older warrior, "clouds don't move like that, don't you think?"[break][break]
Ivystar began to nod her head as Yarrowclaw returned the conversation back to the beasts that ran along the thunder path. Was it a border for them? It could be, but would the beasts try to chase off the cats if they got too close? Then again, ShadowClan didn't chase off ThunderClan unless they were in their territory and vice versa. It made some sense to her when thinking of it in terms of the clans. "I suppose you're right. Though it seems odd to have a single path that leads to somewhere else. It would make sense though since the beasts chase the cats off who try to cross the thunder path." As she spoke of it, Ivystar shifted her eyes back to the night sky with the glittering stars and odd lights as she waited for Yarrowclaw to respond.[break][break]
Her ears flicked back as he began to talk again and her head soon followed to look at Yarrowclaw as he spoke about the monsters chasing the cats. She listened intently and waited for his to speak before she then began to speak. "I've seen them roar past cats who run across the path, their red eyes on their back appear sometimes but then disappear once the cat gets out of their way... though you'be probably seen that more than myself." Her lips curled into a smile and she let out a small laugh as he mentioned he'd been here since before she was born, "while that's true Yarrowclaw, anything could happen. We don't know a whole lot about those beasts." Once again a beast began to pass by them, except this one's roar was much louder than the other beasts. It's roar made some of Ivystar's fur stand on end as it passed quickly. After the beast passed Ivystar continued talking, "How can something change their paws? It seems like it would hurt an awful lot. Not sure I'd like to change my paws..."

As time passed, Yarrowclaw thought, looking back on younger days with a fondness that he wasn’t entirely sure how to express. “I’m curious, Ivystar. I’ll be the first to admit that as an apprentice, I snuck around. I crossed over this path a couple times and poked my nose in Thunderclan’s borders. Have you ever?” Perhaps it was a little wrong to admit something like that, but such wasn’t strange for an apprentice. Young cats were often curious, and sometimes it was nice to have memories of other clan’s territories that weren’t filled with the need for tooth and claw to be glinting in the light. The older tom flicked his tail, wondering why he was allowing himself to be so vulnerable to this cat.
True, she was his leader, and he her deputy. But generally, such openness was reserved for old friends. Were they? He hadn’t put much thought into it. Perhaps they should be if they were to take care of the clan as a team.
His eyes flicked back to the cloud, or blotch of color in the sky, whatever one would have. “I wonder if anyone knows what it is? And no, I suppose they don’t. I don’t really know what else to call it though. It looks like it’s in the stars. Some you can see clearly, some are blocked by it. It kind of moves like the air does on a hot day. But it’s really slow. It looks different little by little, and it looks fairly different each time I see it,” he paused for a heartbeat to gaze at it. “Perhaps a smarter cat might say that’s where the Silverpelt is.” He pondered this idea quietly but shrugged after a moment. “I’m not sure. But I like to look at it, I won’t lie about that. I noticed it quite a few seasons ago when I was still an apprentice.”
Thinking over the things he’d said about the Thunderpath, Yarrowclaw could admit to a worm of discomfort one gave him. If it was a border, where they in it, or outside of it? He pushed the feeling away. “Most of the time, if you’re on it and one comes towards you, stay on the other side of the path. I’ve only seen them turn towards a cat on the other half a pawful of times. Just don’t get under their paws. Under the beasts themselves is fine, I’ve heard its very loud, and the smell burns your nose, but as long as you stay low, and stay in the middle, it will go right over a cat without crushing them. I don’t think that they can crouch down like we can. Some are very short though.” He paused, studying the path quietly. “I know their paws can crush a cat like a beetle. I haven’t seen many cats get up and walk away from getting hit by one of those things. Every so often, you’ll see a squirrel flattened out too. They seem to leave whatever they crush behind.” And it was true, he’d never seen one come back for their kill. He nodded to her words though, knowing that they rang true: they didn’t know a whole lot about them, and a lot of things seemed to be speculation from things that they’d seen over the countless seasons that the path had been there.
Yarrowclaw shook his head, unsure of how to answer her question. “I’m not sure. I’m not sure if it would even hurt them. I mean, after all, they can open their sides and two-legs crawl out of them. It’d hurt an awful lot for something to be sitting in you, wouldn’t it? But they seem to be unphased by it. Maybe they don’t feel pain.” He commented this and shook his head slightly. He knew that there wasn’t really any hope of a cat fighting one of them, but the knowledge of that made it clear that a cat’s only real option with one bearing down on them was to run and hope to avoid those massive black paws.

[attr="class","pwficon"] [attr="class","pwficonbg"] [attr="class","pwfbody"] She looked off at the thunder path once again, the cool looking path with odd yellow stripes running along it. It seemed the monster always stayed to a certain side, as if something was preventing them from crossing. Maybe a kitty-pet would know about it, after all, they spend their entire lives with two-legs and knew a great deal about the things clan cats were curious about. Though she doubt she would ever go out of her way to meet a kitty-pet. She shook that thought from her head of Yarrowclaw began to speak again and she focused on his words.[break][break]
Crossing the thunder path? She'd never done it. Always more cautious as a younger cat, she decided to play it safe when it came to things like the thunder path. She gave a small laugh, "I've actually never crossed it... I was always so cautious around it as an apprentice that I'd make up excuses not to cross it." Her eyes glanced back to Yarrowclaw after she made that comment and it hung in the air for a few silent moments, "I've always been curious as to what's on the other side, even though I can see it. It'd be nice to see ShadowClan from across the way, all those towering trees and our ever so dark territory. The best place to call home." After she spoke, Ivystar thought about crossing, it would be nice to see some of the other clans territory in a time of peace rather than in a time of aggression. Hopefully Ivystar would never have to lead her clan into battle, she would rather keep thing diplomatic than risk the lives of her loyal warriors. However, if it came down to the moment, Ivystar would protect ShadowClan's reputation and power among the other three clans.[break][break]
Her head turned back to the glowing lights in the sky, she let a smile form as Yarrowclaw agreed with her and began to talk aimlessly about the glowing light up in the night sky. No one really knew what to call them? Probably something the two-legs would know, some of them seemed smart. "I'm going to call them the glowing river... has a nice ring to it, huh?" She let a moment pass before speaking again, "a little bit mysterious, but also entrancing. It's beautiful."[break][break]
For once, Ivystar felt the smallest bit of peace within her since becoming leader. She looked over at her deputy as he started talking again, continuing to give her a calm sense of mind. "I suppose so" she spoke quietly before once again laughing as Yarrowclaw mentioned his apprentice days. "You seem to enjoy continuing to let me know you know so much more than me because of your age, don't you Yarrowclaw?" She meant no offense in her comment and hoped Yarrowclaw would know that, to help make it even more obvious she tried to keep the air between them light.[break][break]
Once again, their conversation circled back to the thunder path and the monster that ran along it. Ivystar knew the danger of the monster, all cats who lived near the thunder path knew its dangers and how you should cross it with caution. It was practically drilled into her as a kit and apprentice by her parents, they would always tell her to never cross the thunder path unless she had to and it was safe for her to cross it without injury. Maybe that made her so cautious about the thunder path, or maybe that was just her personality. Who knows? Probably only Ivystar, even though she wouldn't admit that. "I practically run away at the sound of one of those monster. I have no intention of ever having to have to scramble out of one's way. And, I try to drill that same message into my apprentices."

"Speak"
Yarrowclaw turned his head towards Ivystar at her admittance to never having crossed the path. While he wasn’t quite so surprised, he had to admit, he figured that perhaps even she had braved it. It seemed to have been at one point a bit of a ‘rite of passage’ for Shadowclan apprentices. At least, during his time it had been. Perhaps things had changed by the time that Ivystar had gone through? He wasn’t sure, although somehow, he didn’t assume so. Yarrowclaw’s tail twitched in a curious way, his mind working over a series of thoughts before he even dared to even consider the question that had initially flashed through his mind in a childish spur of impulsivity that he had barely been able to keep quiet. He’d come back to it, he was sure of it.
His tabby head dipped in agreement. “It does,” he said, looking up at the streak across the sky, “I’ll always refer to it as that. And it is. I have to wonder what other sorts of mysteries exist in this world. It’s all so interesting to think about. Talk about too, but there isn’t often time for it in life.” He remained quiet for a moment afterwards, before giving a quiet, brief purr, “imagine what everyone would say, if they heard me talking like this? Ol’ stuck up Yarrowclaw has a sentimental philosophical side, oh my.” He gave a small shrug with this, before looking about once more.
He looked over and twitched his whiskers in amusement. “I just really like to age myself. I suppose I’ve truly begun to sound like the elders! Perhaps I’ve spent too much time with them?” Yarrowclaw chuckled slightly at this. “I’ll bet an entire rabbit, that you’ll do it too, one day.” His tail flicked, and he cast a grin in her direction. He looked back once more at the Thunderpath as a monster – the first in some time – flashed past, with a quiet thrum of sound coming from it that made the hair of his ears twitch and tickle like it did when he was listening for a mouse. He blinked curiously at this but didn’t comment on it, having only noticed such a thing a couple times in his late-night thinking sessions.
“It’s a good thing to teach them,” he commented. “You never do know when something is going to happen. I wouldn’t want to scramble away from one either. They’re loud from here, and a few fox-lengths into the forest as well. I can’t imagine how loud it must be under one of them.” But, the path in itself wasn’t of any danger to them. It was just a strange thing that had – at least for some time now – always been part of the landscape between Shadowclan and their neighbors. His head tilted to the side slightly, as he thought back to previous points. The night was quiet, outside of the forest’s normal sounds.
“You said earlier you’d never crossed it. Would you like to live a little with me?”

[nospaces] [attr="class","pwfcontain"] [attr="class","pwfheader"] [attr="class","pwfhdtag"] gemini[attr="class","pwfhdnotes"] sorry this is so late.
[attr="class","pwficon"] [attr="class","pwficonbg"] [attr="class","pwfbody"] The night continued on as the two cat sat and talked together. As time passed, the temperature slowly began to drop and soon there would even be a slight chill in the air. However, Ivystar liked that chill that came in the late hours of the night and welcomed it as if it were an old friend. While she thought about the approaching cold air she looked back at Yarrowclaw who once again began to talk and was referring to the strange lights high in the sky.[break][break]
For a second, she was caught off-guard by his sudden surge of philosophy. While she knew it wasn't unusual for Yarrowclaw to sometimes do this, she was surprised the lights triggered this kind of thinking within the tom's brain. "I think those topics are something you could talk about forever and still never get closer to understading..." She gave off a short laugh as Yarrowclaw commented on his sudden philosophical outburst and blamed it on his old age and how one day she would do it too. "Well, I can live with that kind of talk rather than being the 'crazy elder,' your version doesn't sound so bad" she spoke with a lighter tone and turned back to him to speak again, "and maybe you're just spending time with the right kind of cats, after all, most of our young warriors can be so call 'hot shots,' sometimes it's nice to have that kind of thought process."[break][break]
Just as she finished speaking, another monster raced across the thunder path. Her small hairs rose at the sound as she watched it race along the path, it was rather quiet compared to some of the others. It seemed as time progressed the monster usually got quieter. Maybe they were evolving? Or perhaps Ivystar had just been contemplating the idea of the monster for far too long and was finally losing her sanity trying to figure them out. Her thoughts were broken as Yarrowclaw replied to her about teaching younger cats to avoid them and how loud they must be. She nodded in agreement, "it would scare any cat out of their body to be under one of those monsters. At least I would be scared out of my shell." She laughed lightly at her own comment and looked back at the road, which was dark once again since the monster's passing. Now, the road was peaceful and gained curiosity within Ivystar. She wondered what the path felt like under her paws.[break][break]
It was as if she was entranced by the path for a few moments before Yarrowclaw's voice brought her back to their reality. Did she want to have a little fun? What could be the danger in that? Her eyes shifted to Yarrowclaw's eyes and she gave a devious smile. "I thought you'd never ask, Yarrowclaw. It seems like now is the best time to have a little fun..."
