ravenstar
is a member of
thunderclanplayed by: nightmare.
basics
Breed - black longhair
Eyes - green
Place of Birth - thunderclan nursery
Gender - female
Age - 25 moons
Status -kit / apprentice / warrior / deputy / leader
If Apprentice: Mentor, not optional
Appearance - basically, raven is a black cat with long fur and green eyes. of course, cats aren't basic. raven's black fur looks brown depending on the light and angle. it can even seem silver in strong moonlight. her green eyes stay the same no matter what - a little too bright for her face, but pretty nonetheless. her tail is almost as long as the rest of her body, and her long fur makes it just as wide. underneath her soft coat, she's probably smaller than your average cat, with legs a little too long for her body. but, underneath her soft coat, she's also a solid and compact cat, more through practice than nature. a lifetime of living in thunderclan with more trees to climb than she can count has lead to her long legs being muscular and stronger than the rest of her body put together.

personality
maybe raven was born to be a leader. quietly assertive and collected, she has no problem with putting forward and defending her opinion, but it is far from being set in stone.
but she doesn't agree. outwardly confident, raven is unsure and terrified inside. she doesn't know how to lead a clan, nevermind lead one well.
raven is great at looking like she knows what she's doing, even when she doesn't. this is bound to come in handy throughout her time as leader, especially in the beginning, but it also means she's rarely offered help. and she's not very good at asking for help so, for the most part, she just wings it.
she has no problem with holding her temper - after all, she doesn't really have one. this might make her seem cold and indifferent, but really she's just gentle. her emotions have dull, rounded edges, as if someone's spent too long rubbing at them with sandpaper, and it takes her longer than most to register how she feels.
raven is also stubbornly selfless. after realising just how much she missed as an apprentice, she refuses to get caught up in her own life. she focuses her attention outwardly rather than inwardly. she doesn't pay attention to herself - her feelings can go completely unnoticed, floating beneath the surface - and she can go a long while without really feeling anything at all. And this kind of scares her.
raven dislikes fighting. she will go out of her way to avoid it, though she understands that, eventually, things can boil down to who can hit the hardest. she's level-headed, thoughtful and empathetic. she tends to understand other cats far more than she understands herself. she's the opposite of being reckless - every one of her actions has been thought out, everything she says pre-planned. even her thoughts fall natural into a systematic, logical order that means she can think and react at the same time.
she's never really made friends, and the only relationships she's ever been able to maintain are in tatters, so it's fair to say raven doesn't have a great track record with other cats. throughout her fairly short warriorship, she always felt lonely, and this hasn't changed - despite the fact she's surrounded by cats she cares about, she's never able to shake the feeling she's slightly out of place, like an outsider looking in. even as she becomes leader, this loneliness that eats away at her never differs. if anything, becoming leader has just made her feel even more isolated than before. but, it has also given her more to do, and raven welcomes the distraction.
she relishes her solitude when she can get it, but can only take it in small doses. then she has to distract herself again, from one thing or another with whatever tasks she can find. raven has never been quite sure what she's distracting herself from, but she knows she feels hollow and that she doesn't want to focus on that.

history
ravenstar was once known as ravenkit.
before she was even born, she'd earned herself two siblings - her mother, dappleheart, gave birth to a litter of two kits twelve moons before raven was born. they're names were emberkit, a tortoiseshell she-cat, and ratkit, a black tom. they were fathered by her mate, rookfang. they'd just become warriors - emberfur and ratclaw - when raven and her littermates were born.
raven was the eldest kit and only daughter of her mother's second and final litter. They were born in mid-leaf fall. when she opened her eyes, she was greeted with three younger brothers - antkit, a large black tom, stoatkit, a pale ginger tom, and sootkit, a small black tom.
even as kits, the battle lines between the four of them were clearly drawn. raven stuck close to her youngest brother, sootkit - a gentle tom who would always rather sleep or wander than anything else - whereas antkit and stoatkit, the two middle toms, were always closer. This division never really changed.
the territories plunged into leaf bare just a few moons into their kithood. food was scarce and the winter hard. more than once, raven found herself anxiously waiting outside of the medicine cat's den, hoping for positive of news over one of her brothers, who were lying, sick and starving.
they all survived, though there was more than one close encounter. when the four of them became apprentices, their mother stayed in the nursery. ravenkit became ravenpaw.
she didn't get along with her first mentor. raven was far calmer and less trigger-happy than the tome who had been charged with teaching her, foxfur. despite this, she still tried hard, pushing herself to her limits and trying to overstep them. she was so immersed in her own training, that it was impossible for her to focus on anything of the outside world.
she missed her brother, stoatpaw, and his spiral into darkness. she also missed antpaw sacrificing his own training to try and pull him out of it. she missed sootpaw struggling to keep up, and the strain this all put on her family, she missed the cracks that started to spread.
foxfur, her mentor, retired halfway through her training, after he was blinded in one eye during a fight with a fox. raven found this quite ironic. this gave her the chance to look closely at her own life - from her none-existent relationship with her older siblings, to the distance that had grown between her and her brothers.
her new mentor was a level-headed and thoughtful she-cat named poppyfrost. they got along well, though their relationship ended as soon as training did.
stoatpaw was the first to pull away from her. their training sessions became frosty, their conversations tense. raven put off asking with what she'd done wrong, because she was scared of the answer he'd give. her procrastination meant she never got the chance.
he was found at the foot of a tree in thunderclan's territory. h was assumed to have slipped - it was early leaf bare, just a few moons before they were due to be made warriors, and the bark was frosty. his death was a huge blow to the family. raven was scared by how little she was affected, whereas antpaw as at the opposite end of the spectrum - he was angry. with everything, from his family to his mentor. raven was included in that long list.
when they were meant to become warriors, only raven did. antpaw was still lashing out, and had sidelined his training while trying to help stoatpaw out of a darkness nobody could understand. sootpaw had always struggled, and had simply fallen behind. so, when raven became a warrior, she did so alone.
ravenpaw became ravenmist. alone.
her parents cheered loudly, as did sootpaw. antpaw was nowhere to be seen. raven felt very alone a she sat her vigil that night, something she'd always thought she'd do with three other cats. the next morning, she started life as a warrior - a life she had been aiming for all her life. she'd always imagined it would feel better than it did.
it was only a couple of moons later that she got an apprentice. antpaw and sootpaw became warriors, given the names antstorm and sootclod, on the same day she became a mentor, to a fiery young she-cat named hollypaw. raven felt utterly and desperately alone, but distracted herself by training hollypaw to the best of her abilities.
the dynamic of her family started to change, but this time she was determined to not miss it. as antstorm drifted away, still angry and lashing out, she tried to comfort him and rekindle the friendship they'd once had. antstorm promptly reminded her that they'd never had a friendship. raven had to accept this a fact, as much as she wished it wasn't true.
Six moons later, hollypaw became a warrior. raven was 20 moons old. hollypaw was named hollygaze. she turned out as a fine, strong warrior. raven was proud, of her apprentice and herself.
with an apprentice under her belt, raven was ready to settle back into warrior life, as difficult as she knew it would be. however, she never got the chance.
a moon later, the deputy of thunderclan stepped down. raven was asked to his place. she was unsure, but agreed, despite the fact she was still only young. she assumed he'd have plenty of time to learn how to be a leader. she only learnt that the leader was on his last life after the ceremony.
thunderclan's leader died three moons later. a wound he'd gotten while out hunting had become infected, and it had gotten beyond help by the time he'd pointed it out. at just 24 moons of age, with little to now knowledge of how to lead a clan, raven took his place.
ravenmist became ravenstar.

the moon was a sharp silver half circle in the sky, a bright dot on the sea of black. it looked down on the world like a giant big brother, guiding their every move.
ravenstar sighed. her thick fur shifted as she moved. she kept looking at the sky, even though it made her head spin and her eyes burn. her body protested over being out in the cold, her ears frozen and her paws numb, but she stayed still anyway.
it felt like far too long since she'd been able to sit, alone and without interruptions. she'd been bombarded with questions and answers and congratulations and condolences, the last of which she'd found odd because she hadn't been any closer to the late leader than anyone else. she hadn't gotten a moment of silence since she became leader, and even when she did her thoughts had been consumed by all the things she didn't want to think about, ideas and memories that wouldn't leave her alone.
so, when she'd stumbled across a moment of complete silence, when her mind was quiet and so was everybody else's, she snatched at it like a kit fighting for a ball of moss.
leaf bare was barely at its midpoint, and already there was frost on the ground. the leaves had long since fallen from the trees, and thunderclan's territory was an expanse of bare branches. the world had gone through its colours - from the greens of new leaf to the reds of leaf fall - and was now entering its final phase, the time of year when everything was blue or grey. ravenstar breathed out and watched as her breath made a little cloud of mist. she followed it with green eyes as it rose into the sky and disappeared, fading into the darkness.
the black she-cat stared at the stars again, and when she blinked the half circle of the moon was a bright spot against the black of her eyelids. the lights in the sky were burned into her brain. she shook her head, cold ears complaining at the sudden movement. her fur shuffled around her head.
ravenstar stood up, her muscles shouting at her to leave them alone. she felt the cold through her coat. the breeze made her skin prickle, hot and freezing, as she shook out her pelt. taking one look around the sleeping camp, she padded away towards her own den to try and scrape together some sleep before the sun rose on another day.
