WITH THE LEAD IN HIS HEAD
the black warrior ruffled his fur before he quickened his pace, dipping down into the hollow. his steps were short and speedy, careful not to slip on the steep and sandy sides of the training hollow.
when he regained the ability to keep a normal gate without falling and breaking his neck, blackquill picked up a slight trot, reaching the bottom of the dusty pit.
the concave in the ground was wide, wide enough to be an excellent sparring spot for groups of apprentices and their mentors. for today, it would instead be put to use by some of thunderclan's finest warriors.
he curved his line of pace, circling the divot's outer edges, and brought his eyes to robinflight's black and ruddy spattered face. his pelt prickled slightly with uncertainty.
he didn't know much of her, in fact he didn't know much of anyone besides his family and brother, so he instead judged her by her appearance. her structures, and his memory, told him she was a good many seasons older than him. despite this, she was small. he wondered if she was capable, or another kind of cat who preferred fleeing instead of fighting.
still, other warriors seemed to respect her. was it because of her age? just because she was older didn't mean she deserved more respect than him, did it? he grumbled under his breath quietly.
well, she had only been made a warrior some moons ago. maybe she was a good warrior and had impressed her short time around, from what he'd seen it certainly wasn't her bubbly attitude that gained her respect. she always seemed an annoying ball of energy on patrols or in camp. maybe hunting was her forte.
stuck in his thoughts, trying to figure robinflight out, the warrior circled the concave multiple times before he realized he'd zoned out.
he spoke up.
"rules?" he peeped. "what're we thinkin'; claws out or in? we stop when the other taps out or only when they can't fight anymore?"
he cocked his head, slightly curious. usually when he wrestled with his brother, they'd play with claws out and they wouldn't stop until the other literally couldn't manage to preform any more attacks. a few times, they used the 'tap out' method, but it wasn't a common.
despite this, he'd sparred with some other warriors in the past, and knew most of his clanmates practiced with their claws tucked safely in, and they only preformed a few moves at a time, not tiring each other out. this is what it was like training as an apprentice, and frankly, he wasn't for it. he hoped robinflight was cooler than that, seeing as she was quite the adventurer, but didn't count on it.
around them, life buzzed. birds chirped and many young warriors rustled through the forest, racing or hunting, or even practicing their own spars. luckily, robinflight and blackquill had caught the training hollow before it could be snatched up by any of the other warriors.
thunderclanners preferred to train under broad daylight, and he smiled as it filtered through the trees and onto his back. apprentices usually trained earlier in the day and either hunted or rested around now. he was glad to be training under the splatters of sunlight without chattering apprentices dancing around his feet.
blackquill circled one last time, coming to a halt and covering his flank with a sweep of his tail. his eyes hovered on robinflight's.
